Uncle Terry's character design is a mix between Sherman Hemsley and the existing features of Destruct-O-Tron's face (which you can see here: [link]).
The idea for Uncle Terry was conceived months before The Sherm passed away last month. But when it came time to draw this character a couple of weeks ago, I decided to use Sherman's classic look as a tribute to the comedian whose work I loved in Amen and Screwed.
Starting on the left: I sketched Uncle Terry twice as large usual in my sketchbook using a Paper Mate Flair pen (my favorite!).
In the middle: After scanning in my sketch, I chopped it up a bit and reshaped some areas of Uncle Terry's body, mostly his shoulders. Then, using the track pad and cursor (no tablet, baby!!), I did a simple line drawing of Terry's refined figure.
Finally, on the right: But the Super Haters characters have pretty thick holding lines and my simple digital tracing wouldn't look right mixed in with Destruct-O-Tron and Mind's Eye. So I had to manually bulk up the lines, sculpting them to look slightly uneven in places. And lastly, I added a slight stroke just to the outer edges of Terry's line work to add a bit more depth.
